Compare from File Explorer
With FindChanged Helper installed, right-click a file or folder in File Explorer and choose “Select as left to compare”. Then right-click another one and choose “Compare with …” — FindChanged opens in your browser and compares the two. Files are compared with files, and folders with folders.
How it works
- 1. Pick the left sideRight-click a file or folder and choose “Select as left to compare”. On Windows 11 these items are under “Show more options” (or press Shift+F10).
- 2. Compare with …Right-click another item of the same kind; the menu now has “Compare with “left name””. Click it.
- 3. Compare in your browserYour default browser opens the right tool: spreadsheet compare for Excel and CSV, data compare for JSON, XML and YAML, code compare for other files, and folder compare for two folders.
What’s different
Saves to disk in every browser
Saving in code and data compare writes back to the original file, and copying or deleting in folder compare works directly on disk — in Chrome, Edge and Firefox alike. Deleted items go to the Recycle Bin.
Your files stay on your computer
The helper hands the two selected items to your browser on your own computer; file contents never pass through any server. The web pages come from findchanged.com and are cached locally, so it also works offline afterwards.
Small, per-user install
A single program of about 7 MB. No administrator rights, nothing loaded into File Explorer. Uninstall it from Settings → Apps.
Installing and questions
How do I install it?
Download it, double-click FindChangedHelper.exe and confirm. The helper isn’t code-signed yet, so the first time Windows may show “Windows protected your PC”: click “More info”, then “Run anyway”. You can check the SHA-256 above first (in PowerShell: Get-FileHash FindChangedHelper.exe).
Why don’t I see it in the Windows 11 context menu?
The new Windows 11 context menu only shows items from packaged, signed apps. Click “Show more options” at the bottom of the menu, or press Shift+F10 with the item selected.
Does the helper collect anything?
No. The helper only reads and writes the two items you selected in File Explorer, and only requests the web pages themselves from findchanged.com. The pages’ anonymous usage statistics are the same as on the website and record only that a comparison was opened from the context menu and which tool opened, never file names or paths. See the privacy policy.
How do I uninstall or update it?
Find “FindChanged Helper” in Settings → Apps → Installed apps and uninstall it; the menu items, settings and cache are removed too. To update, download the new version and double-click it.
Does the helper keep running after I close the comparison?
While you compare, the helper runs a service that only your own computer can reach. It exits 10 minutes after the last comparison page is closed and doesn’t start with Windows.
